Why Inclusive Runways are the best for Designers

It comes as no surprise that people want more out of their clothing. More sizes, more diversity, and more inclusion on the runways that show these garments off. Our runways should be a reflection of our real world, full of different body types and textures, just as our own state is full of varying coastal and inland areas, from the sun soaked areas of SoCal to the misty tree-lined highways of NorCal.
As captivating as the West Coast is, our focus is not on its glorious landscape but rather the fashion that exists within it. Our upcoming California Fashion Week runway show will not include height or weight restrictions for our models, allowing for everyone to feel appreciated on and off the runway. This guideline does not just affect the models we work with, but the designers as well; creating new possibilities for clothing that doesn’t just cater to one body type.
Designing for Inclusivity
Designing for inclusivity means designing with intention, and we are excited to work with those who push the boundaries of typical fashion making. We envision timeless pieces that highlight women’s bodies with luxury in mind.
Curves
Finding pieces that work to hug women’s curves rather than hide them. Alternating garments to fit all sizes of curves and shapes.
Size
Since our runway will be catered to women of all bodies, we want our sizing to reflect that. From an xs to an xxxl, our designs will have complete creativity to finesse garments that work for any woman.
Skin Tones
Working with an array of skin tones invites exploration into color theory. As luxurious as our clothing should look, it should also invite that feeling with swatches that catch the eye on every model.
Adaptivity
Adaptability for our models is extremely important. Models with physical disabilities are often not shown in the luxury retail market, but we aim to change that. Anyone regardless of body type or ability should be able to wear high-fashion garments without restraint. Easier clasps, sensory-friendly fabrics, and conversations with the model help create clothing that works with the user and not against them. Everyone should feel confident to live a luxurious life.
All of this and more is in store for this year’s California Fashion Week. Be sure to follow @californiafashionweek on Instagram and email us contact@thecaliforniafashionweek.com for more information and collaboration!
